The Piece

Flannel shirts were a cornerstone of Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent era. First introduced in his inaugural FW13 collection, they remained a recurring signature throughout his tenure. For SS16, Slimane pushed the grunge-inflected “Surf Sound” mood even further, introducing heavily bleached and distressed pieces. Most of his iconic bleached flannels trace back to this season.

This blue & orange version is one of the most sought-after. Seen on the runway and instantly recognizable, it features a dramatic gradient: deep navy through the shoulders fading into a vivid orange across the lower half. The fit is slightly oversized, and the hem is beautifully distressed, crafted to look like years of natural wear rather than something manufactured. One of our absolute favorite Hedi-era flannels.

Collection

The Spring Summer 2016 menswear collection by Hedi Slimane, titled Surf Sound, drew from the spirit of the California coast and the atmosphere of youth subcultures. Presented in Los Angeles, it explored music, surf and skate influences through Slimane’s refined tailoring and a distinct sense of ease.

The collection featured denim jackets, printed shirts, striped knits, and metallic outerwear paired with slim silhouettes. Fringed suede, plaid flannels, and embroidered bombers reinforced Slimane’s focus on individuality and raw energy.
