The Piece

Probably the most iconic outerwear piece from Hedi Slimane’s tenure at Saint Laurent: the original Teddy Jacket in Black & White. Debuting on his first menswear runway for FW13, it instantly became a modern classic. Added to the permanent collection, it remained available throughout Hedi’s time at SLP and for years after, only gradually disappearing from stores in more recent seasons.

This is the first version from the FW13 collection, distinguished by the different waist ribbing, a detail unique to this initial run and different from later offerings.

The jacket captures Saint Laurent’s sharp, youthful energy from the era. The silhouette is slim and slightly cropped, sitting close to the body with a clean, structured shoulder line. Ribbed trims at the collar, cuffs, and hem reinforce the classic varsity language, while the textured wool exterior, luxurious silk lining, and high-quality leather detailing elevate it with a refined finish.

From Hedi’s landmark FW13 collection, this piece balances classic Saint Laurent codes with the sleek attitude that defined the period. Minimal detailing and a restrained finish keep the focus on proportion and shape, making it an effortless yet unmistakable modern archive staple.

Collection

Saint Laurent's Fall/Winter 2013 menswear collection marked Hedi Slimane's triumphant return to menswear after six years away from Dior Homme, staged dramatically at the Grand Palais with a spinning amusement park ride equipped with speakers as the centerpiece. Slimane cast actual musicians from indie bands including Egyptian Hip Hop, Swim Deep, and Theme Park rather than traditional models, dressing them in his signature ultra-skinny aesthetic amplified with California grunge elements: devastatingly tight leather trousers, Pendleton wool flannel shirts, distressed denim adorned with metal chains, sequin-dusted Fair Isle knitwear under camel duffle coats, and animal prints paired with brown cowboy ankle boots.

This was Slimane reclaiming and intensifying the razor-thin rock 'n' roll silhouette he pioneered at Dior Homme. The collection's raw grunge authenticity and youthful rebellion set the tone for Slimane's transformative tenure at the house, democratizing luxury through street culture just as the founder had done nearly fifty years earlier.
